In fact the only thing you see is the entrance to the vaults, and this entrance is a very triangular looking, metallic looking, futuristic looking object coming out of the side of a mountain. The Global Crop Diversity Trust is the body responsible for maintaining the Svarlbard Global Seed Vault in partnership with the Norwegian government.īrian Lainoff: The seed vault has been designed with a futuristic mindset and a visualistic mindset, because most of the work behind the seed vault is inside the mountain.

Hello, Antony Funnell here and welcome to the first in our new 2016 series of programs. In fact, it's often referred to by the media as the Doomsday Vault. Its mysterious and imposing presence, among the ice and the snow and the isolation, gives it an almost James Bond like quality, the entrance perhaps to some subterranean hideout for an evil megalomaniac intent on destroying the world.
Antony Funnell: Travel north to the Arctic and to the Norwegian island of Spitzbergen and you'll find a rather curious thing a great concrete and steel tunnel whose entrance brutally protrudes from the side of a hill.
